DANCE WORKSHOP SERIES
at Sertoma Arts Center
(see address and map below)
This series offers something for everyone! Students will learn and enhance techniques while expanding on the variety of moves in each dance. The Saturday workshops introduce the dance and the Sunday workshops go more in depth. You can sign up for one or both each weekend. Each workshop has a separate fee of $30/person.
FOXTROT
Saturday, January 30
12-2:45pm
FOXTROT (continued)
Sunday, January 31
2-4:45pm
Foxtrot is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, continuous flowing movements across the dance floor. The American style version of the Foxtrot takes many forms: The Bronze level Foxtrot, truest to the original Harry Fox version, is a simple combination of walks and chasses ideal for social dancing. Silver American Foxtrot adds continuity, taking on the quality of its International counterpart. And with the possibility of open, apart, and side by side movements, the Gold level Foxtrot resembles the signature styles of Fred Astaire and Gene Kelly.

WALTZ
Saturday, February 20
12-2:45pm
WALTZ (continued)
Sunday, February 21
2-4:45pm
Waltz is a smooth progressive dance characterized by long, flowing movements, continuous turns, and rise & fall. Graceful and elegant, Waltz dancers glide around the floor almost effortlessly. The American style is punctuated with lavish open movements, underarm turns, and solo spins. At 28-30 measures per minute, the tempo is slow at best, but the expressive quality of the music often invites very powerful and dynamic movement from dancers.

MERENGUE/HUSTLE
Saturday, March 6
12-2:45pm
Merengue is a fast Latin dance that never slows down. Very easy to learn and I often refer to this dance as the “marching with style”. It's the most popular dance at most Latin clubs along with Salsa.

RUMBA

12-2:45pm
RUMBA (continued)
Sunday, March 21

A moderately slow Latin dance with plenty of wraps, under arm turns and a truck load of flirtation. Often called the dance of love, you can Rumba to a wide variety of music from Tito Puente to Jimmy Buffet.

12-2:45pm
SALSA (continued)
Sunday, April 11

A very energetic Latin dance. Lots of fun, complete with spins, sharp movement, and crisp turns. Very popular in Latin clubs along with merengue. Styles varies depending on where you are from.

"How much does a private lesson cost?"
The base rate for a private in-home lesson is $50/individuals and $70/couples. An individual lesson is 45 minutes, and a couple lesson is an hour. There may be an additional travel fee to come to your home if you live outside of Raleigh. Lessons at a rented studio space in North Raleigh are $60/individual or $80/couple.
"That seems high...why so expensive?"
Actually, it is not as expensive as you think. Consider these 3 points:
1. In a private lesson, you're paying to have the instructor ALL TO YOURSELF; thus, the fee is not shared with other students like in a group class -- and we have to make a living! :-)
2. You learn alot FASTER when you're working personally with an instructor. Fast learners are not slowed down by the group's pace, and slow learners are not neglected by the instructor's divided attention (obviously, we try to help those having difficulty, but there's only so much individual attention we can give while being fair to other paying students).
3. Many ballroom studios charge MUCH MORE!
(we know...we've worked at them.)
The price of a 40-minute private lesson at some studios costs $100!!!Most (75%) of that goes to overhead (rent, advertising, fancy lighting, etc.). Why pay so much extra when you can get the same quality instruction for so much less? (Remember...we're the same instructors we were when we worked for the fancy studios.) Plus, at a studio, you have to share space and music with a bunch of other lessons taking place at the same time; with me, you get a private studio space all to yourself!!!
